Michelle is a portfolio manager at Innovation Edge, focussing on supporting tech and tech-enabled investments. Her personal mission is: “To find and nurture passionate, talented, driven people, and connect them with the resources they need to build sustainable, world-changing organisations”.
Michelle was Head of Innovation at the Cape Innovation & Technology Initiative where she also oversaw the Khayelitsha Bandwidth Barn, and before that managed research publishing and events at corporate social investment and sustainability consultancy, Trialogue. She started her career as a journalist and book publisher.
Michelle is co-founder of Book Dash, an innovative open license children’s book publisher that believes that if every child could own a hundred books by the age of five, we’d address a key part of the performance gap that opens between poor and wealthy children as they progress through school. Book Dash has produced 138 titles through book hackathons, distributed more than 665 000 physical copies and 1 million digital downloads, and had over 100 000 downloads of its free Android app.
Michelle has a BA from UCT, a B Phil in Sustainable Development (Cum Laude) from Stellenbosch University, and in 2018 completed an elective on Strategic Foresight through Stanford Continuing Studies.
“Innovation happens when people make their ideas live in the world, and the world embraces and feeds them.”
