Global Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20 each year to increase awareness of the rights, care and education of children. We spent time talking to young children from the Emthonjeni Playgroup in Khayelitsha, Cape Town about what they think Children’s Day is about, why they think they matter, what their hopes and dreams are for their future and their rights as children.
Here’s what they had to *say:
- “I think that World Children’s Day is about playing and letting kids play outside all day.” – Ntlakanipho Siziba
- “I matter because there is no other person like me in the world.” – Asenathi Qubanisi
- “When I’m older I want to be a soldier so that I can protect my family.” – Elihle Siziba
*All the children’s words have been translated from isiXhosa
